Rightsholders and National Library agreed on Digital library project

On the World Book and Copyright Day, Kopinor and the National Library of Norway signed an agreement regarding a pilot project for digital books on the Internet.

Through the project, called Bokhylla.no (’Bookshelf’), the library will make all Norwegian books from the 1790s, 1890s and 1990s available on the Internet.

Digital license in Norwegian schools

Kopinor, the Norwegian RRO, and The Norwegian Association of Local and Regional Authorities (KS) have concluded an interim arrangement which allows digital copying in schools and local administration until expiry of the current copying agreement (31 Dec 2009).

Strong platform for developing new activities

- 2007 was a stable, good year for Kopinor. Remuneration revenues from Kopinor’s traditional activities have remained stable, providing a robust platform for developing new models and new activities. Along with users, we are now devising solutions for the use of intellectual property in digital format in the school system as well as within higher education.

These are the words of Kopinor's Executive Director, Yngve Slettholm, in Kopinor's Annual Report 2007.

Towards digital licensing

Kopinor is actively working towards digital licensing for the entire educational sector in Norway. The work is being carried out in cooperation with the Norwegian Association of Local and Regional Authorities (KS), who represents primary and secondary schools, and the Norwegian Council for Higher Education, who represents universities and colleges. The process may lead to digital licensing already in 2008.

Kopinor, the Reproduction Rights Organisation of Norway, represents copyright holders of published works through 23 member organisations - 6 publishers' associations and 17 authors' associations.

By law or through bilateral agreements with Reproduction Rights Organisations in other countries, Kopinor also represents foreign rightsholders. Today, Kopinor collects for approximately 80 % of the copyright protected material photocopied in Norway.

Kopinor is empowered by its member organisations to negotiate and conclude collective agreements on photocopying and similar uses of copyright protected works in all areas of society. A new and important goal is to negotiate agreements on digital reproduction of Norwegian works in libraries, in educational institutions and in public and private enterprises.

In 2008, Kopinor distributed NOK 151 million to Norwegian rightsholders and 38 million to foreign rightsholders. Since 1980 Kopinor has collected more than NOK 3 billion in reprographic fees.
